Romance or not?
One of the aspects of my book that I've yet to iron out is whether or not to include any romance/relationship sub-plots. It seems like pretty much every YA book does, but does that mean it is critical to the story?
My target audience is YA readers (adult, too, of course), but I'm hoping that it will especially appeal to male readers, for whom it seems there are fewer fiction reading options.
Thoughts? Is a romantic sub-plot critical for success? Will it make a book more or less interesting to male readers?
